Laboratório de Geomática e Sistemas Marinhos - GEOMar

The Geomatics and Marine Systems Lab (GEOMar), part of the Marine Management, Ecology, and Technology Group (GTMar), conducts research at the land–sea interface, focusing on understanding the complex interactions between terrestrial, coastal, and marine environments. In particular, the lab investigates how terrestrial processes affect ocean and marine systems, and how marine and coastal processes, in turn, influence terrestrial environments.

GEOMar's activities are organized around four core research areas: (I) Coastal Dynamics, (II) Connectivity and Watershed–Coastal Interactions, (III) Climate Crisis and Coastal Risks, and (IV) Coastal and Marine Spatial Planning. By integrating remote sensing and geoprocessing approaches with interdisciplinary analytical frameworks, GEOMar investigates the complex interactions between natural processes and human activities across coastal and marine environments. Our research supports evidence-based decision-making and contributes to building resilient coastal environments, addressing the challenges posed by the climate crisis, promoting the sustainable use of coastal and marine resources, and developing effective strategies to address emerging coastal challenges.
