Instructional Sequencing in a Real-Time Multi-Agent Simulation-Based Serious Game for Learning Trophic Dynamics in Sixth Grade
Serious games are increasingly adopted in formal education, yet their integration into instructional sequences, particularly in simulation-based games addressing complex domains such as ecology, has received limited systematic investigation. This study examines the effect of different instructional sequences influence learning processes in a real-time multi-agent simulation-based serious game designed to support the learning of trophic dynamics in sixth-grade science education. Two instructional sequences were compared: gameplay preceding traditional instruction and gameplay following instruction. The results indicate that the sequencing of the serious game is not pedagogically neutral. When used as a pre-instructional activity, gameplay supported initial conceptual acquisition through exploratory interaction with the simulated trophic system. In contrast, when used after instruction, gameplay supported knowledge consolidation, allowing learners to test, refine, and stabilize previously introduced concepts related to trophic dynamics. Beyond sequencing effects, usability and player experience were assessed to ensure that interface quality did not confound the learning outcomes observed. Learning was measured immediately after each condition; retention over time was not assessed, and the findings therefore concern short-term acquisition and within-session consolidation. These findings contribute to serious games research by informing the curricular integration of real-time simulation-based games in formal education.
