ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Master's and Doctoral courses in Mechanical and Materials Engineering are tuition-free.

OBJECTIVE

The main objective is to train high-level professionals capable of proposing and developing scientific research in related fields and building a critical mass to solve non-trivial engineering problems, generating and disseminating technical and scientific knowledge. It also aims to qualify faculty for higher education teaching, enabling them to understand the scientific and technological process of knowledge generation and diffusion.

To be a consolidated Graduate Program, contributing solidly to national research development and intensifying internationalization initiatives for national and international recognition.

The total number of available positions is published through specific public calls (Editais), depending on the vacancy availability of each faculty member.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Applications for the Master's and Doctoral programs are open to both Brazilian and international candidates.

REQUIREMENTS

• Master's Degree Requirements: Eligible candidates must hold a bachelor's or teaching degree in Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Architecture, Mathematics, Medicine, Dentistry, Biology, Biochemistry, or hold a technologist degree in areas related to Mechanical and Materials Engineering. The Selection Committee may accept special cases. Diplomas obtained abroad are only accepted with the Hague Apostille or consular legalization. Candidates currently in their last semester of undergraduate studies may apply. Enrollment is conditioned upon the presentation of the diploma or a certificate of completion. Full-time students have the possibility of receiving scholarships. Industry professionals, preferably with experience in their intended research line, are also accepted and can be admitted as part-time special students. It is recommended to contact a potential advisor beforehand to discuss the research work.

• Doctoral Degree Requirements: Eligible candidates must hold a Master's degree obtained from programs recognized by the Ministry of Education (MEC) or State Council of Education (CEE), approved by CAPES, in fields correlated to the program's concentration areas. Diplomas obtained abroad are only accepted with the Hague Apostille or consular legalization. Candidates may apply by presenting their master's defense minutes or a declaration from the Academic Secretariat stating they will defend their dissertation before the doctoral enrollment period.

COURSE STRUCTURE AND EVALUATION CRITERIA

The course structures are flexible. Disciplines are chosen according to the student's specific needs.

• Master's degree students must complete a minimum of 20 credits before starting the dissertation project. The duration is between one and two years, including the dissertation defense. Proficiency in English is required as an essential part of the course. During the program, students must also have a scientific paper accepted in a conference or scientific journal, or submit a paper to a journal, or submit a patent application. This production must be co-authored with the advisor and related to the dissertation topic. Upon oral presentation and approval by an examining board, the student receives the title of Master, granted by the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC).

• Doctoral degree students must complete a minimum of 30 credits before starting the thesis project. The duration is between two and four years, including the thesis defense. Proficiency in English is required as an essential part of the course. Students must also have a scientific paper accepted in a journal with a 50% percentile or higher, co-authored with the advisor and related to the thesis topic. Upon oral presentation and approval by an examining board, the student receives the title of Doctor, granted by UDESC.
